New Mexico’s first state law enforcement agency was created on Februrary 15, 1905 in the form of a small, but organized, company of Mounted Police. In 1933, the Mounted Police became the New Mexico Motor Patrol, and finally in 1935 changed to the New Mexico State Police. Since its humble beginning, the NMSP has grown into a sophisticated organization with specialized divisions, teams, units and programs. This kind of diversity allows the NMSP to tackle almost any law enforcement challenge with the right equipment, training and experience.
